SPORTS MINISTER COMMENDS OKOWA FOR SPORTS DEVELOPMENT

Delta State Government has been playing a leading role in sports development in the country, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare has said.
Dare who disclosed this yesterday during a courtesy call on the Delta governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa at Government House, Asaba, noted that the state has been doing great exploits in sporting activities.
According to him, the state performed excellently well during the National Youth Sports Festival held in Illori, Kwara State.
The Minister noted that he has seen consistency in sports development in Delta State since Senator Okowa became the governor of the state.
He stated that his team was in the state to identify with Governor Okowa’s efforts towards sports development.
“As a country and as a Ministry, all our plans are going on smoothly for the 2020 Olympics,” the Minister said, pointing out that a good number of the athletes that they were preparing for the world sporting events were from Delta State.
The Minister who was accompanied by the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, commended Okowa for making the NYSC orientation camp in the state one of the best in the country.
Receiving the Minister and his entourage, Governor Okowa said that the state was very passionate in promoting sporting activities through sports development.
Okowa stated that the state government had institutionalized Head masters’ cup, Principals’ cup and school sports festival with a view to harnessing the sports potentials in the state.
While expressing hope that everything was ready for the 2020 National Sports Festival in Edo State, the governor said that the state would give the needed support to its team to enable them excel.
“We are going to give the needed support to our team.It is our hope that Delta State would host the next edition of the National Sports Festival,” the governor stated, even as he expressed hope that Nigeria would do better in the 2020 Olympics.
At the end of the visit, the minister and his entourage moved to the Stephen Keshi stadium, Asaba where they were conducted round various facilities at the stadium by the Chairman, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick; Chief Solomon Ogba and the Chairman, Delta State Sports Commission, Chief Toniobok Okowa.
Earlier, Governor Okowa received the torch of unity for the 2020 National Sports Festival at the Stephen Keshi stadium, Asaba.

His Excellency, the Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has charged the entertainment industry with the task of coming up with workable plans to compliment government efforts in taking the industry to greater heights.
The Governor who was ably represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Engr. Lawrence Ejiofor, made this statement as he flagged off the Delta Talent Development Summit which took place at the Dome Event centre, Asaba.
His Excellency expressed delight at the initiative of sensitizing key players in the sector with a view to having better understanding of the amazing roles the industry is playing. He noted that Asaba and it’s environs have become a major entertainment hub in Nigeria, hence the State has decided to capitalize on this positive development through the Directorate of Culture and Tourism by embarking on several programs and projects which include the film village, to enhance the entertainment industry, attracting both domestic and foreign investors.
He welcomed them to the event stating that Delta is proud to be the home of many notable entertainers and urged them to brainstorm using the platform to unveil what the state Government is doing to promote the industry in the State.
The Summit which was themed “Accelerating Delta State Economic Growth through Talent Development and Enterprise” organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Talent Development, Ogusbaba Ogude, had in its program artistic and entertaining displays by young entertainers and various pannel sessions. It played host to several top Nigerian entertainers including Alibaba, Richard Mofe Damijo, Omawumi, Ufuoma McDermott, Bovi, Tara Durotoye, and a host of others. It also played host to several Government dignitaries and several young people from the general public.

MINISTRY OF YOUTH DEV CONTINUES TOUR, VISITS WARRI SOUTH WEST
Commissioner for Youth Development, Comrade Ifeanyi Egwunyenga, in continuation of his sensitization for critical youth stakeholders, visited the youths of Warri southwest.
He unveiled to the youths of the Ministry’s programs and policies stating that the training has two categories to accommodate interested youth, irrespective of educational qualifications.
Comrade Egwunyenga admonished them to key into the Rural Youth Skills Acquisition program (RYSA), designed for those who have learnt a skill but do not have the funds to set themselves up and its strictly for the illiterate and semi literate youth, residing in the local government.
While the Tertiary Institution Entrepreneurship Program (TEP) is a collaborative program, with the state owned Tertiary Institutions.
He further enlightened the youths that the State Government initiated this program, to encourage entrepreneurship development adding that the program is designed to train and set up eligible undergraduate students, with exceptional entrepreneurial drive. “It is designed for those with exceptional passion for entrepreneurship.”
The Commissioner explained that the mindset and value reorientation program is a public and private partnership (PPP), is geared to foster positive social attitudes, create platforms that will expound opportunities through mindset and value reorientation of the youths.
He explained that the Ministry is able to accommodate more programs because “our youth friendly Governor, Sen Dr Ifeanyi Okowa graciously upgraded us from a Directorate to a Ministry.” As he promised the youths that the process of selection in the entire training program will be transparent.
In their response, the president Ijaw Youth Council, Comrade Eric Omare, and other community youth leaders, expressed happiness and applauded the Governor for the programs and also the commissioner for finding time to reach out to the youths at the grassroot levels, stating that it was the first of its kind.

DTSG HOLDS ORIENTATION WORKSHOP FOR STEP PWDS
A one day Orientation Workshop has been held for Persons Living with Disabilities (PwDs) with a call on them to pay tribute to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for providing a platform of opportunities for them.
The call was made by the Chief Job and Wealth Creation Officer, Prof Eric Eboh during a one day Orientation for them in Asaba.
The orientation workshop which was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development was attended by 25 PwDs drawn from all the local government areas in the state.
They included PwDs who are physically challenged and hearing impaired and are to be trained under the state government’s Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP) in different vocational skills of their choice such as Fashion Design and Tailoring; Hairdressing and Makeover; Welding and Fabrication; Shoe Making; Catering and Confectionary; ICT among others.
Prof Eric Eboh enjoined them to utilize this opportunity to learn well so that they could add value to their lives and Delta State in general, adding that their success is government’s success as well.
He pointed out that job creation office was created so that aspiring youths could be gainfully employed and economically stable, stressing that this was made possible because of the good nature of the governor who created such opportunities for PwDs to acquire and be established in relevant vocational skills of their choice in the past four years.
He asked them to be good ambassadors of the programme and to remain grateful to His Excellency, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, stressing that PwDs had often been neglected by previous governments. He congratulated them for being among the selected few.
In the same vein, the Permanent secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs Oghenekevwe Agas, said all selected PwDs needed to stay relevant to themselves in becoming entrepreneurs and advised them not to abuse the opportunity given to them.
She admonished them to be productive and develop their skills saying that it was the favour of God that got them selected.
Speaking on behalf of other trainees, Miss Okotie Odemi Joy, from Ethiope East, expressed her joy for being selected as she had a passion for Fashion and Design. She commended the state government for creating the platform for youths to become entrepreneurs.
Also, Mrs Roselyn Evieraisan, a trainer in Fashion and Design spoke on the challenges in training PwDs especially the hearing impaired, though they learn faster than the able bodied trainees.

WOMEN ADVISED ON POSITIVE IMPACT IN SOCIETY, TO STRIVE BEYOND CHALLENGES
Women have been advised to strive beyond barriers and make positive impact in every sphere of life.
The advice was given recently during a road walk by various civil society groups to mark the 2020 International Women’s Day celebration, tagged “I am Generation Equality” in Asaba.
According to our reporter the road walk which started from Saint Johnbosco Catholic Church, Asaba and ended at Steven Keshi International Stadium with displayed of placards with various inscriptions, said that Women should be given utmost priority in the society just as the men do.
Meanwhile, a former member of the House of Assembly and Director-General, Asaba Capital Territory Development Agency, Hon. Onyemachi Mrakpor and other Civil Society groups including the National Council of Women’s Societies, (NCWS).
Hon. Mrakpor said that, the impact made by Women in the nation and across globe, including the late Professor Dora Akunyili and Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo, who is currently working with the South African government, is a tremendous one and they should be encouraged in every area of their endeavours.
She observed that, some women fold their hands expecting men to give power to them, and advised women to build their self confidence and utilize any opportunity they had to impact in the society.
At the event, Chairman of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Delta State Chapter, Mrs. Pat Gbemudu commended the Governor for inaugurating the Child Rights Implementation Committee and other committees to protect the rights of Woman and Children in the State.
She congratulated those Women who are making impact in different spheres of the economy, and appealed to women to lift other women in any capacity they can , rather that pulling them down.
The Convener of the event and Programme Director, International Centre for Women Empowerment and Child Development (ICWECD), Barr. Julian Akaeke Ogwulu, said that, Women had great potentials when is properly harnessed will benefit the society at large.
Earlier the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties, Barr. Bridget Anyafulu, a Lawyer, urged parents and caregivers to stop all forms of abuse, discrimination and violence against children under their care.

NURSING MOTHERS CELEBRATE AS MERCYGATE FOUNDATION GIVES OUT FREE SANITARY PRODUCTS
It was celebration galore on Thursday at the Oshimili South Primary Health Care Centre, Umuagu Asaba by Nursing Mothers when officials of a Non-Governmental Organization, Mercygate Foundation visited the Health Facility to distribute different types of sanitary products to nursing mothers as part of the 2020 International Women’s Day Celebration.
The nursing mothers who were overwhelmed with joy after receiving diapers, sanitary pads, wipes and antiseptics from Mercygate Foundation, burst into praise and worship to God almighty for the surprise free sanitary products.
The over 80 beneficiaries who were at the Health Centre for their routine post-natal visit for vaccination of their babies, appreciated the founder and initiator of Mercygate Foundation, Mr. Peter Mrakpor for his kind gesture in celebrating the 2020 International Women’s Day with them in a special way.
Mr Peter Mrakpor, Founder and Initiator of the NGO, who is also the Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice flagged off the maiden edition of the scheme tagged “Nursing Mothers Aid Scheme” in April, 2019 in Primary Health Care Centres in Ughelli South Local Government Area where similar items including sanitary towels, antiseptics, mosquitoes treated nets amongst others were freely disbursed to over 400 beneficiaries as part of the foundation humanitarian service in promoting the welfare of nursing mothers and pregnant women in the State.
Matron of the Umuagu Primary Health Care Centre, Mrs Okenyi in an interview with journalists who covered the event, commended Mercygate Foundation for the laudable initiative of using the occasion of the 2020 International Women’s Day Celebration to reach out to nursing mothers in the State.
Mrs Okenyi while urging other NGO’s to emulate the humanitarian gesture of Mercygate Foundation to reach out to nursing mothers and support health institutions in the State, enjoined Mercygate Foundation to sustain the programme.
Earlier, the Coordinator of Mercygate Foundation, Barr. Lilian Eserinune while addressing the nursing mothers disclosed that the gesture was part of the NGO’s efforts in promoting the welfare of pregnant women and nursing mothers in the State and in commemoration of the 2020 International Women’s Day Celebration.
She said the Initiator and Founder of the NGO, Mr. Peter Mrakpor was very passionate in his humanitarian services in putting smiles in the faces of the people even as she promised that the distribution of the relief materials would be sustained and extended to other primary, secondary and tertiary health institutions in the State.

OBI ADIMABUAH CALLS FOR SYNERGY BETWEEN STAKEHOLDERS IN OKPANAM COMMUNITY
The Asagba of Okpanam, in Oshimili North Local Government Area, Obi Ozili Adimabuah (JP), has reiterated his avowed commitment towards ensuring the peace, unity and socio -economic growth and development of Okpanam community.
Obi Adimabuah, who gave the assurance in his palace in Okpanam while speaking to newsmen shortly after his 73rd birthday celebration, said that peace and unity were the only panacea for meaningful development of any society.
He, however, called for synergy with stakeholders in the community aimed at enhancing effective and purposeful leadership in the area, adding that leaders should display high sense of responsibility for the overall well being of their people especially by operating open-door policy.
Obi Adimabuah urged them to give attention to all shades of opinions that could move the community forward while thanking God for sustaining his life to celebrate another birthday and the privilege to contribute his quota of the growth of Okpanam community.
He urged youths to always channel their energies into meaningful ventures that would add more value to their lives and the society in general.
The traditional ruler also lamented the high spate of insecurity in many parts of the state, occasioned by the ravaging Fulani Herdsmen and enjoined the security agencies to intensify efforts towards protecting lives and property of citizens, just as he decried unnecessary harassment of innocent citizens rather than going after culprits and tackle insecurity.
Speaking in an interview, elder Patrick Okonkwo, popularly known as ‘Pato ‘ and Mr Eze Nwankwo, described Obi Ozili Adimabuah (JP) as a very focused leader who had sustained his passion to uplift his people by always having their at heart and prayed God to give him more strength and wisdom to lead his people.
Elder Patrick Okonkwo, who particularly maintained that Okpanam community since the emergence of the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chief Patrick Ukah had over the years witnessed giant strides in terms of infrastructural development
He advocated more robust surveillance of the state by the security outfits, even as he recommended the strengthening of the security architecture in order to achieve results.

EFFURUN FLY OVER IS IN A PERFECT STATE – AUGOYE

Contrary to rumours making the rounds in Uvwie and Warri South Local Government Areas and environs, the Honourable Commissioner For Works, Delta State, Chief James Augoye has assured that the Fly Over in Effurun was in a perfect state.
The works commissioner gave the assurance while responding to questions as to the rumoured collapsing state of the fly over during Governor Ifeanyi Okowa media interactive session with journalists at the Press Centre, Government House, Asaba, yesterday.
While stating that the assurance was based on the inspection of a fly over by a team of experts; he however affirmed that a section of the structure was closed to vehicular movement due to the beautification project.
It would be recalled that prior to the clarification, rumour mills had it that a section of the fly over was collapsing.
Meanwhile, Governor Okowa at the event assured that the Harbour Market Ovwian in Udu Local Government Area and Enerhen Junction in Uvwie Local Government Area would be given a face lift.
However, the number one citizen of Delta State expressed deep concern over the ravaging corona virus otherwise known as Covid 19.
He noted that the incurable dreaded disease was causing a global economic depression. He added that it has adversely affected the international price of crude oil, the main stay of Nigeria economy.
The Governor further expressed worries that if nothing was done to check the ugly situation, it may affect the execution of projects owing to the ongoing fall in price of crude oil.

UDU COUNCIL BOSS,OTHERS CALLS FOR PEACE BETWEEN UKPIOVWIAN,OGHIOR COMMUNITY

Udu Local Government Council Chairman, Hon Onajite Brown and opinion leaders in Udu met on the 12th March with ten representative of both communities (UKPIOVWIAN and OGHIOR) seeking the way forward in resolving the tension that has been on since on Monday.
The meeting which was held at the Chairman office lasted for over two hours as both warring Communities were made to give a detailed explanation of what led to the current crises which had claimed the life of a youth and leaving one critically injured in the hospital both victims from Oghior community and also the wanton destruction of properties of both community.
According to the president of both communities it was ascertained that the crises erupted as a result of a boundary disputed land case which is still pending in court.
The president of Oghior community Paul Kome alleged that some youth from Ukpiovwin went to the said piece of land and started digging foundation and was stop by the Oghior youth because of the pending court order. In the process both youths went into argument and fought using the tools meant of digging the foundation on themselves.
The Ukpiovwin youth in turn held an Oghior youth hostage but was later released by the intervention of the youth president and Hon Steve Sokoh and a peace meeting was called .it was after the peace meeting that the youth president of Ukpiovwin was attacked beaten and injured. Causing the fresh crises that led to the death of one youth in Oghior.
However, the Udu Chairman after hearing from both community leaders advised them to eschew anything that will cause crises in the community and pursue peace at all cost because it is the only panacea for development.
Chief Onajite Brown begged both parties to let go of the past that recounting their losses will only bring bad memories and bad blood between them. And reunited in love and peace and coexist in peace and harmony like they used to
In Response the president of Oghior thank the chairman for the peace meeting and also pleased for the deployment of security personnel to Oghior The Chairman refuse his plead saying that deployment of security personnel lo the area will cause money and further tension that peace is better and cheaper to attained.
A ten man peace committee headed by Hon. Steve Sokoh was set up with the mandate to identify the original owner of the disputed land. Also the sum of one hundred thousand was given by the chairman to care medically for the critically injured person.

ORHUWHORUN DECLEARED AS UDU KINGDOM

The high court sitting in Otor-Udu the headquarter of Udu Local Government area yesterday Wednesday, 11th March gave his final verdict declaring Orhuwhurun community as part and parcel of Udu kingdom.
The case which was presided over by Hon. Justice C.E Achilefu also declared that the traditional authority right is vested on the Ovie of Udu kingdom That He alone is recognised as the monarch in Udu any other traditional monarch is illegal.
Justice Mrs Achilefu further restrained the ORHUWHORUN community from parading themselves as autonomous community with a different monarch outside the Ovie of Udu kingdom, but rather get it cleared that there are among the thirty-one communities that make up the Udu kingdom.
The Ovie of Udu His Royal majesty Barrister Emmanuel Delekpe said that though justice delayed but not denied that this case which had been on for eight years had finally come to an end with justice well served. That Udu had always been one and will remain so.
Also celebrating this landmark victory is the secretary to the Udu traditional council Chief Mrs Elizabeth Odjugo who expresses joy with the victory of the high court judgement urging the people of Orhuwhorun community to integrate themselves to the main traditional structure For one United Udu kingdom.
The court also levy a fine of fifty thousand naira against the Orhuwhorun community and henceforth warned that anyone that parades Himself as the Ovie of Orhuwhorun community will be guilty of an offence punishable under the Chieftaincy laws of the Delta State and thereby risks two years imprisonment.

INSECURITY: TIDI ISSUES WARNING AGAINST TROUBLE MAKERS IN WARRI SOUTH

The Chairman Warri South Local Government Council Dr Michael Tidi said his administration will not tolerate anyone causing trouble in AldersTown community, Warri.
The charge by the Warri South Local Government Chief Security Officer came on the heels of report that two persons were shot Thursday night (yesterday) by yet to be identified persons.
Dr Tidi, who advised people of Alders Town to give peace a chance in the build-up to the community’s forthcoming election, commended law enforcement agencies and local vigilantes in the area, in the fight against consumption of illicit drugs vis-à-vis its relationship with crime and criminalities.
He explained that his administration was doing everything possible to provide the enabling environment for communities in the local government area to conduct their activities independently.

Speaking at the swearing in ceremony which took place at the NULGE office in Orerokpe, Comrade Ochuko described the office of each of the executive’s as a representative of every department in the local Government council; he said the main function of each executive is to act as an intermediary between the upper house and their various departments.
He described the position of the executive’s as a task and also a call to serve, he urged them to be of good conduct because they are seen as role models within the Local government council and not to think of the material benefits they will get from their position rather sacrifices should be made to make the union and Local government reach great heights.

The Udu Council Boss, Hon Jite Brown, has assured the Comrade Matthew Aghoghophia Emuejevwe led newly elected executive of the Nigerian Union Of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Udu Chapter, of his administration’s desire and readiness to working with them so as to improve staff welfare.
Hon Brown made this declaration, during the swearing in of departmental representatives cum official reception organized for the newly elected NULGE executive of the Council at the Steve Sokoh’s Hall at the Secretariat.
The Chairman, represented by his Vice, Hon Justice Iyasere, promised the newly sworn in NULGE executive a robust working relationship between the civil servants and political office holders, even as he emphasized the need to consolidate on the existing peace and unity among staffs of the Council.
The Chairman, who, through his vice, had earlier showered encomiums on the outgoing NULGE Chairman and his executive, Comrade Blessing Doghor for sustaining an harmonious working environment among staffs, enjoined Comrade Emuejevwe to tread the footsteps of his predecessor by mending fences, where necessary, as well as carry all staffers along for the purpose of achieving a wholistic staff welfare.

The President General of kanidinma Development Union, Sir Patrick Okoh has called on the people of Onicha-Uku in Aniocha North Local Government to assist the government in providing relevant educational facilities to improve teaching and learning in Comprehensive secondary school.
Sir Patrick made the call during the 2020 Annual Inter house sports athletic competition of the school at Onicha Uku.
Sir Okoh, who was also the Chairman of the occasion was represented by Mr Samuel Ganiru, said that the school being the only secondary school in the community therefore all hands should be on deck to support the school to achieved greatness in academic pursuit.
Also, he appealed to them to see the school as their own rather than feigning ignorance of its existence
Earlier in her address of welcome, the principal of the school Mrs pat Okonjo announced that the students of the school are performing wonderfully in sports activities especially during the just concluded Delta state sports festival which emerged 1st, 2nd & 3rd positions in 1500 meter , 800 meter , high jump and 300 meter races respectively.
However, the principal used the occasion to thanked the Onicha-Uku Kanidinma development Union for their numerous support to the school to enhance teaching and learning; and also reminded them to resuscitate the ICT centre as they earlier promised to enable the students access the facilities.
In the same vein, Mrs Okonjo highlighted the numerous challenges confronting the school which included, perimeter fence, set of Jessy, javelins. Discus, and a set of jas band (drum set) similarly she appealed to the state government refurbish the school bus to ease movement of staff and students.
The PTA Chairman of the school Mr Emmanuel Morka while speaking to journalists appealed to the parents to desist from sending their children and ward to other schools in the neighbouring communities as this will continue to reduced the population of students in the school.
He implored the NYSC to post relevant corps members to the school especially those that can teach the school curriculum.
