DELTA @ 26: WE HAVE A LOT TO CELEBRATE, SAYS OKOWA
As Delta State celebrates 26 years of its creation, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has said the people have a lot of reasons to celebrate.
Governor Okowa stated this at an Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Delta Province 3 Headquarters, Asaba.
According to the Governor, “as a People, as a State and as a Government, we have every reason to celebrate because, if not for any other reason, from August last year when we marked our Silver Jubilee to this year, there is reasonable restoration of peace, especially in our creeks where there is no longer destruction of pipelines.”
“though the impact of the peace that has returned to the creeks may not have been felt in our economy, because, the state did not only suffer from the effect of consistent low price of oil for more than 38 months; we were not just affected by the price going down and the quantum produced but, there is hope that it will be better.” Gov Okowa stated.
“We are grateful to the church for the prayers, we are thankful to the youths for sheathing their swords, we thank our traditional rulers for their interventions, and to all those who worked for peace to return to our state, we say, thank you,” he said, adding, ‘this is a time for us to think, we should submit ourselves to the fact that each and every one of us has a role to play and we must be ready to offer leadership in one way or the other; we must continue to provide leadership in our homes and communities; each and every one of us is important in building a new Nigeria.”
The Governor used the occasion to kick against any action that could lead to disaffection in the country, asserting, “we must be cautious of the statement we make because, the unity of this country is what all of us must work to sustain; we must learn to partner with ourselves and engage in actions that will deepen our love for one another.”
“We thank God for the return of Mr President to the country, death is not a thing that one can wish any one and the return of President Buhari deserves to be celebrated, Nigerians have come to realize that it is better for us to remain united as a people,” he emphasized.
Delivering a sermon at the occasion, Rev. Dr. Jonathan Ihwighwu, called for support for Governor Okowa’s administration and urged parents to concentrate on instilling the right morals on their children for a better society to be achieved.
He also, challenged those in position of authority to use such to glorify the name of God by engaging in the right actions.
Present at the Thanksgiving Service were, Senator James Manager, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborovweri and his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Friday Osanebi, Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Marshal Umukoro, former Deputy Governor Benjamin Elue, traditional rulers, political office holders, among others.
Prayers were offered for the country, the state, the Governor, political leaders, among others at the ceremony which also, featured special gospel renditions.

DELTA @ 26: UKAH CONGRATULATES DELTANS FOR BEING RESOLUTE
As Delta State celebrates the 26th anniversary of its creation, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, has congratulated Deltans for being resolute all through the period, especially the two years of this administration.
Speaking after a service held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Unity Model Parish, Delta Province 3 Headquarters, Asaba, to mark the occasion, Mr. Ukah said that Deltans have every reason to celebrate.
The Commissioner stated that despite the shortfall in federal allocation and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), the State Governor has prudently applied what was available to the State to very critical areas of development in the three Senatorial Districts of the State.
Mr. Ukah urged warring communities in the State to sheathe their swords and embrace peace as no meaningful development can take place in areas were insecurity is the order of the day.
He charged Deltans to continue to support the present administration as the State Government was more than ever before determined to bring more developmental projects to all parts of the state.
Mr. Ukah assured that all contractors who stopped work on their projects when the raining season started would return to site as soon as the dry season sets in.

DELTA AT 26: “WE HAVE EVERY REASON TO CELEBRATE” – ANIAGWU
As Preparations heighten for the celebration of the creation of Delta State since 26 years ago, the Chief Press Secretary to Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Mr. Charles Aniagwu says Deltans have every reason to celebrate.
Aniagwu who was fielding questions from journalists in Asaba said, “As a state created 26 years ago, our leaders and indeed, all Deltans have cause to celebrate because the state has recorded huge socio- economic and political transformation within the period. We may not have been able to develop to a level we anticipated, but today we have been able to record considerable number of milestones that we can be proud of as a state in various areas of development.”
He said successive and present administration in the state had been able to focus on construction and maintenance of the vital infrastructure like roads, bridges and drains.
Specifically, Mr. Aniagwu pointed out that Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration since assuming office has embarked on the construction of more than 98 roads, covering a distance of over 612 kilometers, realizing that road development and construction is the backbone for the achievement of the SMART agenda.
These roads, he pointed out, “are intended to link up our various communities to enhance social- economic development in the state. The movement of farm produce from one locality to another has been enhanced with the provision of motor able roads linking our communities.”
“The unprecedented growth in our state capital as witnessed in recent times is indicative of the fact that the dividend of democracy is gradually trickling down to the masses”, he opined, adding “ today the state capital is growing at a phenomenon speed, we have been able to add a level of momentum, the fact is that the state capital has moved away from a glorified local government headquarters to something that looks more like an urban center”, he added.
He said Asaba, being the state capital has been enjoying unprecedented level of peace, as a result of the conscious efforts of our past and present leaders of the state. You will agree with me that the rapid socio-economic development of Asaba, especially the invasion of Nollywood actors into Asaba is as a result of the peaceful nature and environment of the fast growing city.
In the area of education, Mr. Aniagwu explained that, “we are still registering a level of progress as the state is paying more attention to vocational training for our students to reduce the incidence of unemployable graduates. The state is focusing on graduating students who can not only employ themselves but graduates who can become employers of labour.”
Mr. Aniagwu said, “It is on record that the state government has repositioned the technical and vocational schools in the state by investing huge resources to ensure that they become center of excellence, for example, His Excellency Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa approved the upgrade of infrastructure and equipment in Agbor, Ofagbe and Sapele technical colleges as well as the Issele-uku, Ogor and Utagba-Ogbe technical colleges.”
According to him, a lot of policy initiatives have also been directed at the tertiary institutes as the Delta State University and the state polytechnics have received various degrees of attention from the government in the recent times in terms of upgrade of facilities and funding.
He further stated that the state has also achieved a lot in the areas of Healthcare, Agriculture, Transport, culture and tourism and many more.
He said in spite of the huge successes recorded as a state within these 26 years, the state government is not rolling out the drums; rather, the celebration will be low key in view of the economic mood of the nation.
According to him, the recession that is ravaging the country will not permit for frivolous spending; rather such funds would be channeled towards uplifting the life of Deltans.
He said Governor Okowa is building on the foundation laid by the administrations of James Ibori and Emmanuel Uduaghan, “we are sustaining the mother and child healthcare programme, the aged are also being taken care of, we just introduced the contributory health insurance programme, a number of hospitals are being revamped, we are hoping that our revenue improves, so that we can start addressing some other challenges in the state.”
He pointed out that “As a state government we are not owning our workers, the state government has taken steps to pay the pensioners.

CJ ADVOCATES SCRUTINY OF SOURCE OF CHILDREN’S WEALTH
Parents and guardians have been urged to always thoroughly investigate the source of their children’s’ wealth before applauding them.
Delta State Chief Judge, Justice Marshal Umukoro gave this admonition at the launching of the Madonna Magazine published by the Benin Ecclesiastical Province of Catholic Women as part of events to mark the 2017 Seminar and Fund Raising organized by the Benin Ecclesiastical Province of Catholic Women Organization held at Ubulu uku, Delta State.
Justice Marshal Umukoro who was the chairman of the occasion, tasked Christian mothers to always do a background check or profiling of suitors who come to request their daughters’ hand in marriage before hurriedly giving consent, stressing that they should not be carried away with the flamboyant life style exhibited by such prospective sons-in-law.
While commending mothers for the prudent management of homes, perseverance and sacrifice in bringing up children in a godly way, the Chief Judge charged them to do more, disclosing that statistics shows that the number of divorce cases in the court and juveniles who perpetrate criminal acts are products of broken Christian homes.
He stressed that this dangerous trend could only be reversed when mothers who are naturally closer to the children tirelessly imbue in them moral principles, Christian tenets and the spirit of hard work from infancy.
The Chief Judge who was accompanied by his wife Mrs. Lizzy Umukoro, Chief Registrar of the State High Court of Justice Mrs Celestina Dafe and former commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development Mrs Betty Efekoda, declared the book launch open.
The provisional seminar/leadership training with the theme, ‘ Catholic Response to the Social Challenges of Marriages and Family Life’ also featured spiritual talks, leadership training and development workshop.
