Delta State Gets Appeal Court

Delta State, today joined the number of states with an appeal court situated in them, with the commissioning of her own complex in Asaba, its capital city.

The court which was commissioned by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, witnessed a large turnout of guests who came to witness this epoch making event.

According to the revered Court of Appeal President, the need for expansion via establishment of divisions is an aspect of the judicial reform agenda which serves to enhance access to justice and speedy disposal of cases as well as efficient administration of justice.

Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa commended Okowa for bringing this project to light within the short period saying that the Benin division which covers Ondo and Delta State usually has a very full workload but with the creation of a new division in Delta State, making it the 17 division in the Country, justice dispensation for people within and around the state will be greatly expedited.

In his remarks, the Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, noted that the commissioning ceremony is special not just because of the size of the Court Complex, but because of the hope it represents and the assurance it gives on cost effective and easy access to justice delivery in the State.

“We have not only added a major federal institution to the public service sector landscape in the State, we are extending the frontiers of justice administration in Nigeria.” He stated.

According to Dr. Okowa; “This is a proud day for the Delta State Government, the legal profession and all Deltans. When I think of the excitement in the voices of many of our eminent jurists and distinguished legal practitioners as they accepted our invitation to grace this occasion, it dawned on me how much the establishment of this Court means to them”.

The Governor said that this is a new page in the unfolding story of justice administration in Nigeria adding that this will greatly advance the common good and social justice of the State.

He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the Judicial Financial Autonomy Bill is passed into law as soon as possible.

The Governor applauded the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa whose vision and tenacity of purpose was critical to making this dream a reality even as he thanked the project coordinator, contractor and staff for their dedication in ensuring that this project was delivered within the given time.

Earlier, the Secretary to the State Governor, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, commended the Governor for ensuring that this project is completed and commissioned adding that this would reduced the risk which travelling to Benin Court for Appeal posed to litigants

The high point of the ceremony was the unveiling of the symbol of justice and the commissioning of the Court of Appeal E-library named after Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa.
