NIPR CONDEMNS SPATE OF INSECURITY IN NIGERIA, ATTACKS ON DELTA COMMUNITIES…CALLS FOR URGENT STAKEHOLDERS’ INTERVENTION

The Delta State Chapter of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), has condemned the spate of insecurity in Nigeria and the incessant attacks by bandits on individuals and communities in Delta State, describing it as one attack too many.

The group in their February general meeting, presided over by the Vice Chairman, Mr Godfrey Osakwe, came up with a 2-point communiqué from its monthly PR Clinic on the State of the Nation, which centred on the general insecurity ravaging communities in Nigeria today.

“As concerned stakeholders, we are worried at the increasing rate of insecurity and criminal activities in Nigeria. The brazenness at which these bandits carry out their nefarious activities suggests a near collapse of our security architecture.

“Therefore, it has become expedient to retool our security system and device a new strategy to tackle the issue of security in Nigeria head-on,” the group’s communiqué advised in preamble.

Continuing the body said: “The Institute however, called on Delta State Government and security agencies to brace up for the challenges of insecurity in Nigeria by putting a proactive arrangement on red alert for effective policing of communities in Delta.

“Recently, Issele-Azagba, Otulu- Atuma-Akwukwu-Igbo road axis, Abavo, Ndemili, Abraka, Eku and some other communities in Delta State came under attack by criminals and bandits suspected to be Fulani Herdsmen.

“Equally, the Institute called on the Federal Government to heed the advice of the majority of Nigerians to rejig the nation’s security architecture to allow for fresh ideas in the fight against Boko Haram and insurgents in Nigeria, particularly in the North East region.”

The group unanimously affirmed that there was need to change the service chiefs in order to usher in fresh strategies into the military in its quest to exterminate insurgency in the country.

Nevertheless, the group commending the Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for the improved outlook of the state, through its urban renewal programme and infrastructural development.

It called for a step-up effort by the state government on security partners with residents and business operators in the State.

The partners, according to the NIPR, are expected to be encouraged by the state government to install solar powered CCTV cameras in and outside their homes and business premises for enhanced security and effective policing of Delta State.

It also advocate a legislation requiring financial institutions, filling stations, telecommunication companies, hotels, public buildings/arena and religious centres among others to install CCTV would go a long way to institutionalize security and effective policing of Delta State.

“As a responsible body, we would not relent in lending our voice to issues of the time and proffering solutions for good governance and sustainable development,” the institute stated.
