Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has fixed trials for the 2016 Rio Olympics for July 7-9 in Sapele, Delta State.

Speaking in a press conference in Lagos, the AFN announced that the 2016 National Trials will be merged with the Confederation of Africa Athletics (CAA) Grand Prix, with both events slated to hold in same venue in Delta State.

According to the AFN president Solomon Ogba, the trials will hold on the 7th and 8th respectively, while the Grand Prix also known as the Warri Relays, will take place on Saturday, July 9th.

However, it was communicated that certain standards must be met before an athlete can qualify to compete in Sapele. The only events without standards are the long distances.

For instance male athletes must have at least clocked 10.75s to compete in the 100m, while their female counterparts must have posted 11.80s to qualify for the competition. For the 200m, male sprinters must have returned a time of 21.55s, and the women, 24.50s.

AFN also states that the list of athletes going for next month’s IAAF World Junior Championships in Poland will be released by the 4th of July.
