Delta State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday hailed Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for uniting the South-South region under one political platform following the aftermath of Edo governorship elections.
The elections which saw Governor Godwin Obaseki of the PDP defeat his arch rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) means that all six states of the South-South geopolitical zone have been united under one political platform.
Accordingly, stalwarts of the PDP led by the state party Chairman, Kingsley Esiso, his Deputy (Delta North) Moses Idu, Oshimili South Chairman of the PDP Ogbueshi Dada Okonji and Director-General of Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) Hon Joan Mrakpor trooped en masse to celebrate the election results in Asaba yesterday.
Other party faithful at the rally included the Commissioner for Information Mr Charles Aniagwu, Commissioner for Housing Chief Festus Ochonogor, PDP state woman leader Lady Kanwulia Omoko and numerous political appointees.
Addressing the mammoth crowd, Esiso commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who is the Chairman of the PDP South-South Governors’ Forum for ensuring that the mandate of the people of Edo State was realized in the victory of Governor Obaseki on the platform of the PDP.
In his words, “It gratifies us that at the time our governor is leading the pack in the South-South, we brought victory to Edo State” even as he ridiculed voices that had earlier threatened “to snatch Delta State from the PDP”.
For Hon Mrakpor, the victory of Governor Obaseki was as a result of reaching out to the grassroots to campaign, a model which Governor Okowa is known for, stressing that “Governor Obaseki won because of his association with Governor Okowa”.
Meanwhile, Aniagwu described the jubilation as an expression of liberation from the shackles of political tyrants, adding that Governor Okowa and his Rivers State counterpart Nysom Wike were able to reclaim Edo State for the PDP.
Aniagwu also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for not meddling in the elections, even as he expressed confidence that the PDP will emerge victorious in the forthcoming Ondo State governorship election.
