Tourism has been identified as a veritable avenue to boost state government’s Internally Generated Revenue and employment for the youths of the State.
Hon. Dan Okenyi, Delta State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism disclosed this when he paid a working visit to the Delta State Tourism Board, Asaba.
The Commissioner who bemoaned the neglect of tourism because of oil boom in the State and Nigeria in general, stated that tourism has been relegated to the background, despite having the potential to be big business and if well attended to could be an alternative to oil and gas and a source of huge revenue to the state and the country at large.
He promised to improve the requisite tourism facilities that abound in the state, and make them viable to generate revenue for the State Government.
He stated that improving the tourism centres in the State is in line with the present State Government’s SMART agenda.
In her remarks, the General Manager, Delta State Tourism Board, Mrs. Josephine Anyameluho, thanked the Commissioner for the visit and pledged the Board’s co-operation and support to make Delta State take its pride of place in tourism in the country.
With the Commissioner during the visit were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Mr. Joe Anuku, Directors in the Ministry and from Delta State Tourism Board.
